Expected Outcomes:

1. Engage students through the increased use of technology. Teachers will become familiar with the use of the Mimio to enhance lesson delivery.
Success:

- Grade 5/6 class was paired up with the K students to assist with computers

- Grade 1/2 class worked on Comic Creator program

 - Grade 3/4 class used the Mimio for a variety of activities (including math activities, daily graphing, etc.)

- Grades 3 to 8 created PowerPoint presentations in various subjects

- Students in Grades 3/4 and 7/8 worked on the All the Right Type program

- Five teachers took training on how to use the Markbook program

- Several teachers used SAG Inservice day to work on the Mimio program

2. Implement the Healthy Buddies (Healthy Living Program) with Grades 1/2 and 5/6.

Success:

- The 5/6 class provided 15 lessons to the Grade 1/2 students on the value of healthy eating, vigorous physical activity and personal well-being

3. Promote the principles of Sustainable Development by creating individual class projects with an environmental, social justice, or well-being focus.

Success:

Environmental

- Grade 5/6 class organized a Plastic Bag Roundup

- Grades 5 to 7 did an invertebrate study

- Grades 3 and 4 visited Mariash Quarry to study rocks and fossils

- Grades 3 to 7 learned about the Solar System with a visual presentation of a portable planetarium called the Star Dome

- We have continued our composting program

- We have continued our recycling program

- An Environmental Day was held for K to Grade 8, which focused on scats and tracks, oil spills, plants, composting, social justice PowerPoints by the Grade 8’s and a trip to the Balmoral Water Treatment Plant

- K to Grade 4 presented the play, “The Lorax” (Gr. 3/4 students also presented an excerpt for the opening of the Visual Expressions show)

- The Grade 3/4 class went to the Narcisse Snake Dens (along with Brant-Argyle students)

- Cho, the corn snake, visited the Kindergarten room

- Guest Speakers, Mr. & Mrs. Duncan, gave a presentation about owls to the K to Grade 2 students

- K to Grade 2 took a field trip to the zoo and learned about leaves at the Conservatory

Social Justice

- The Grade 3/4 class learned about homelessness, and raised money for The Ladybug Foundation

- Our annual Terry Fox Run raised $1340.76. Guest speaker, Janis Ollson, spoke about the technology of her prosthetic leg.

- Student Council held a raffle with proceeds to UNICEF

- Student Council members participated in the school Remembrance Day service, as well as two school choirs

- We collected food items and toys for the Christmas Cheer Board

- Students in Grades 3 to 6 participated in “Angels for Africa”

- Grade 5 to 7 students visited the Pioneer Quest site

- The Gr. 8 class, with Mrs. Margetts, organized the “Skate for Scott” skateathon, raising $3281.25

- Grade 8 students attended Student Voice

- Grade 8 students prepared Social Justice PowerPoints

- Aboriginal artist, Anthony Martin, led a 5-day carving workshop, through Artists in the School

- The Grade 3/4 class visited Omega School (Interlake Colony)

- Grade 5/6 students checked vehicle speeds in Balmoral through an MPI radar program

- Guest Speaker, Ron O’Donovan, presented on the “Grow a Row” program

- The Grade 3/4 class hosted a visit with “Flat Stanley” from Barrie, Ontario

Well-being

- K to Grade participated in the iWalk to school around Balmoral

- Mrs. Riley led Zumba workshops with all the students

- The Grade 3/4 students participated in the Fitness Finders program

- X-Company did a workshop on dance/martial arts with Grades 1 to 8

- Grades 1 to 4 participated in the Speed Stack World Record attempt

- Students from Grades 3 to 8 took part in a curling workshop

- Student Council held a silent auction with proceeds to go to the new playground fund

- Grades 6 to 8 participated in a Curlorama

- K to Grade 4 created clay projects with artist Jennifer Sonnenberg

- Grade 8 students completed the First Aid Course

- Students from K to Grade 8 participated in a weekly skating program for Jan. and Feb.

Balmoral-  teams represented our school at all the divisional sports activities

- Students from K to Grade 8 contributed art work to the Visual Expressions Art Show. Grades 1 to 4 were able to attend the show and participate in an art workshop

- A group of students participated in the Marathon run

- Students took part in Beach Day

- K to Grade 8 participated in a “Rocks and Rings” workshop

- K to Grade 8 did a community walk for Clean Air Day

- Grades 5 & 6 attended Camp Y

4. Continue to promote the Respect Program as a school-wide focus.

Success:

- Each class established their own respect agreements

- A Girls’ Self-Esteem Program was organized by our social work clinician, Ms. Beer

- Grade 3/4 girls participated in a craft club

- Balmoral School held the official opening of our renovated spaces and the dedication of our new library

- Students from K to Grade 8 created portfolios to share their learning this year with their parents
