Congratulations to the students in 6S who participated in Law Day Mock Trials on Sunday, April 15th. They did an outstanding job as presenting the case of Peter Rabbit to the honorable Cynthia Divine at the Law Courts Building in Winnipeg. Andrew E., Carter B., and Scott Y. were very convincing crown council lawyers, while Ian C., Hanna M. and Cameron S. worked to defend Peter Rabbit’s innocence. Kayley W., Miya S., Jonas P., Cody N., Kieran M., Sapphire K., Sarah F., and Breona D. displayed their fantastic acting skills on the witness stand. Kasyn R. did an excellent job of playing the court clerk, and Justine D. displayed her talents as the courtroom illustrator. The day was a huge success and all of the participants should be very proud of their hard work.

“Change for Change” was a huge success! As a WE school we have made a commitment to one global action and one local action. Throughout the year we have done several local actions including donations to the Christmas Cheer Board, Pennies for United Way, Donation to a local family and other activities. For the months of April and May we have committed to raising money for Free the Children’s Alternative Income Project. We are sponsoring the community of Lai Gow, India. Lai Gow, India is a very poor tribal community where children are forced to work at a young age to help provide food for their family. Our students want to see these children have the same opportunity of being in school that they have. They are raising money to purchase livestock and sewing machines which will enable the women of the community to earn an income to help support their family, allowing their children to stay in school. Stonewall Centennial is committed to this community and look forward to getting the opportunity of watching how their money is being put to use. Through events such as a hockey pool, cupcake sale, candy sale, a school barbeque, and donations of change our school raised $675.00! WOW! Stay tuned for our “Big Event” which will be announced early next week! A big thank you to our Superintendent, Mr. Metcalfe for his donation and to trustee Fran Frederickson for her involvement in our hockey pool!
What a year it has been for our grades 5-8 Girls Choir under the direction of Mrs. B. Rutherford! In March the girls’ were awarded the Gertrude Lowery Memorial Trophy as the most outstanding Gr. 5-8 choir in the Winnipeg Music Festival and then competed in the Rockwood Music Festival in April and were awarded highest mark, a 92...and then were awarded “National” recommendation from the adjudicator a the Rockwood Festival.
These girls are AMAZING! And they have worked so VERY hard. It also goes without saying that this could not have happened with out the INCREDIBLE dedication of our music director Mrs. Rutherford. She has put in countless hours of her own time to make our choir programs possible.
A huge congratulations goes out to our choirs and band students who participated in the 2011-12 Rockwood Festival of the Arts this year. All students who participated were fabulous ambassadors for our school. They all worked very hard and made our school proud. A special thanks to Mr. D. Horbas our band director who directed both our school band and the Balmoral school band together! They sounded wonderful. A job well done!
The Interlake School Division has been presented with a great opportunity through Manitoba Education to participate in the Tell Them from Me Survey. TTFM is an online school survey system that can provide a forum for students, teachers and parents to make their voices heard. It produces information that administrators can use today to shape effective learning strategies, reducing barriers to learning, and to ensure that our schools offer the safest and most welcoming learning environment for all students. The survey is part of our continued efforts to improve our school. Student participation is voluntary and it is completely anonymous. If you have ANY questions do not hesitate to call the school.
The grade 6 students went on an excellent field trip to Winnipeg Art Gallery last month. They were able to view the Norman Rockwell exhibit and allow it to inspire them in sketching their own masterpieces. In the afternoon the students were given charcoal pencils and were able to experiment with many different techniques that they have been exposed to in art class and throughout the exhibit. It was an excellent day and thank you to all of those who were involved in making it happen.
On Friday, April 20th, our grade 7&8 students viewed a highly engaging video from MADD Canada.
MADD Canada’s school programs bring high-energy drug and alcohol awareness and risk reduction messaging to the world of education.
Youth and school programming have been a key component of MADD Canada’s youth services, education and awareness initiatives since 1994. The programs are designed to communicate directly with young people on their level and in their language, and encourage them to take a closer look at their values and perceptions.
Damages is a fictional story that opens in a courtroom where we meet Jesse, a young man who up until recently had a promising future. Jesse has been charged with four serious crimes. He is an impaired driver who caused a horrific car crash. Be sure to talk to your child about the video so they can share what they learned from this experience. It was a very moving experience for many of them. We appreciate the opportunity to view this video at a largely reduced cost which was subsidized by MPI.
On Friday, April 20th the grade 7 & 8’s participated in “Cover the Night” and put up Kony 2012 posters all around Stonewall Centennial School. This was to raise awareness in our school to make Kony visible. Everyone was really excited to help out and be a part in this amazing event. Dakota T., Alex M., Taylor S., and Emily F. gave presentations to all of the classrooms to help get everyone involved. Many people were excited to get involved and had fun doing it.
If you would like to learn more about Kony 2012 please go to this website: www.kony2012.com
I want to thank Mr. Hoglund for having me back to the school. I had the opportunity to teach every class about the performance of magic. I’ve taught this workshop all over Manitoba and Ontario and the kids at Stonewall Centennial are by far the best behaved and the easiest to teach.
It’s my hope that not only will they remember how to do a trick or two but more importantly they will embrace my message of finding your passion and through practice being able to do what you love as your career. If you “follow your bliss” you’ll find you never work a day in your life.
A big thank you to all the students for their full participation. Your enthusiasm is what makes it so special for me. Keep practicing and remember to keep the magic secrets to yourself ;)
In the moment, for the moment,
Anders

Congratulations goes out to Mrs. Szilagyi on receiving a grant from the Province of Manitoba for $215.00 from her application for the Healthy Schools Environmental Campaign!
The province funds schools to undertake projects that support an important health and wellness issue. For each campaign, the province makes $100.00 plus $0.35 per student available to schools in Manitoba. The schools must undertake an activity or project that increases awareness of the specified health issue.
Mrs. Szilagyi’s application was for School Yard Greening/Naturalization. Her ideas included starring a horticulture club using organic fertilizers produced locally allowing our students to grow vegetables indoors. Once the indoor garden is established, the club will apply their knowledge to growing plants for Mother’s Day. Another project Mrs. Szilagyi would like to undertake is building bird houses for nesting birds.
Thank you Mrs. Szilagyi for taking the time to apply for the grant and for your commitment to the Environmental Club!
