Our Mission Statement

We at Grosse Isle School will foster a safe environment that encourages life-long learning, respect and appreciation for all in order to prepare students to reach their full potential and to become productive members of society.

School Profile

• 44 middle year students in Grades 5-8

• .20 resource teacher

• .10 guidance counsellor

• .08 life skills (shops/home ec. at Warren Collegiate)

• .50 Administration

• 2.97 classroom teachers

• 2 – 3 hour a day educational assistants

• .50 secretary

• library clerk/lunch hour supervision  -  4 hours/day

• 1 part-time custodian

School Priorities 2010-2011

1. to increase student engagement

2. to continue to increase school spirit and school climate at all grade levels

3. to continue character traits, education, and social responsibility in all students

The above goals were developed by the school staff in consultation with parents and reflect the divisional goals set out by the school division. From these goals, staff developed plans of action, expected outcomes and activities. The following are activities implemented to reach our objectives.

1) teachers continued to focus on several areas to help increase student engagement including: increased use of hands on activities, smartboard training, student self-assessment and peer assessment.

2) To help increase a sense of school spirit, several spirit days and presenters were brought in for the student.

3) Agendas contained inserts reflecting the following character traits: respectful, responsible, controlled, punctual, reliable, creative, optimistic, self-motivated, persevering, thrifty, gracious, ambitions, courageous, resourceful, joyful, kind, patient, tolerant, honest, thankful, polite, considerate, generous, cheerful, loyal, sympathetic, patriotic, trustworthy, fair, cooperative selected traits were highlighted during guidance classes .

 A number of charities were supported to help increase the concept of social responsibility including: Terry Fox Foundation, Unicef, Japan Tsunami, Relief (Red Cross), Winnipeg Humane Society, Interlake Food Bank, Heart and Stroke Association.

Some 2010-2011 Year Highlights

• Raised $200.00 for Terry Fox through our “Hands for Terry” initiative. For $3.00 students could put a handprint and sign it in the front hallway.

• Held a Community Building Day with Rosser School and Terry Fox run on September 23. Students were divided into cross grade teams and participated in a number of cooperative games. We finished up with our Terry Fox Run through the Grosse Isle Community.

• Our Cross Country team won the small school banner at the middle years cross country meet in Teulon.

• We had a Halloween Dance on October 29 and all proceeds were donated to UNICEF.

• Bus safety poster contest winners 1st place – Brandee Coutu – Grade 6, 2nd place – Austin Holod Grade 5

• Grade 5-7 went on a ski trip to Stony Mountain – February 23

• Grade 8’s went on a ski trip to Asessippi – February 23 & 24

• Phil Aubrey from Power 97 – guest reader for I Love to Read Month on February 10.

• Grade 7/8 students participating in a photography project called Photosensitive which deals with environmental themes.

• Boys won Divisional curling banner

• Girls were runner up for “A” side Divisional basketball

• Boys won “B” side Divisional basketball

• Grade 5/6 raised $165.76 for the Winnipeg Humane Society

• Held a school curling bonspiel on March 18th

• The School had a fundraiser for Japan Tsunami/Earthquake relief called Fujo for Japan and raised $716.98

• The grade 8 students presented Voices of Youth Project at the grade 8 Student Voice workshop on April 6

• The Grade 5/6 class participated in an Elections Workshop on April 11

• Milk spirit Week was held on April 25-29, events included dress as something on a dairy farm day, milk chugging contest, dress as multiples day, dress your teacher as a cow contest, gender swap day, partner pudding eating contest, crazy hair day and ice cream cone sale.

• GIPAC Turkey Dinner

• Christmas production of ” North Pole Exposure”

• Jump rope for Heart raised $1435 for the Heart and Stroke Foundation

• Grade 5 Heritage Day at Lower Fort Garry

• Grade 6 Farm Safety Day

• Division track and field meet

• Grade 8 Camp Arnes Trip

• Grades 5-8 trip bowling and swimming

• All students participated in Visual Expressions Art Show

• We had a Wildlife Rehabilitation Centre Presentation in May

• Grade 7/8 students participated in Brush out Poverty

• Rosser Field Day
