Wow! That’s the only way to describe the evening of April 26th! Sharing of student portfolios with parents is always a highlight of the year. REPAC once again sponsored a family barbecue and then there was Squirm. We replaced festival and talent show with the musical this year and the children once again showed what superb performers they are! They spoke so clearly and sang beautifully. It is always a joy to work with children who are so enthusiastic about performing. Thank you to REPAC for organizing the barbecue which allowed everyone time to mix and mingle. An enormous thank you goes to Angela Emms for making a cake which was a work of art. I would like to thank the REPAC and the families of Rosser School for the fitting present of a gift certificate to Journeys. It will be put to very good use.
Ms. Rutherford and three students travelled to Stonewall to make a presentation to Interlake School Division Senior Administration and Board Members. The children narrated a presentation which outlined the sustainable development projects that the school has carried out in the last three years. Johnathan H., Jade P., and Taylor B., spoke about the initiatives which follow our motto, For Children; By Children in the area of social justice and the environmental projects that they have worked on. These same children will be presenting at the University of Winnipeg on May 25th to students across the province at a Sustainability Forum.
There was 100% turn out of families for the Portfolio Night conferences. This is such an important event in the lives of your children. As one Kindergarten put it, “Do you know what my mom liked about my portfolio?” “Everything!!” When you come and comment on your child’s (children’s’) work it says you care like nothing else! Thank you for taking the time in your crazy busy schedules to come and celebrate learning!
“What are the things that make you Squirm?” Taking the time to learn an entire musical in the Spring was a lot more fun than we figured. You know that the children had a good time when they were still singing the songs the next day! A special thanks to parents who made the wonderful worm, bats and spider costumes. They were outstanding! We made a total of $145 for school supplies for Brooklands School children. We were also hoping to send some of the money to our sister school in Kampala, Uganda to help with the lunch program there. Unfortunately, it seems that some of the evening’s proceeds were taken from the silver collection bowl during the performance. Sadly this will result in less money to help children that struggle to have enough.
REPAC once again proved that they are the hosts with the most. Burgers, veggies, dip, cheese pops, chocolate milk and water were generously offered after portfolios. This great event allows time for our parents and children to visit in a fun and relaxing space. Thanks so much for all the effort that went into it.
The children have been busy doing all sorts of jobs to raise money for our sister schools in Uganda and Brooklands. At this point we have received $99.45! Thank you to our hard working children and generous family members!
As part of a New Initiatives Grant with the Division, our school has purchased 15 GPS units. The children will be learning to use them this month. (as soon as the Principal figures them out). On May 28th, the Grade 3 and 4 students will be travelling to Warren to spend a day hunting for geocaches and getting to know our friends in Warren and Woodlands Schools. Once the children get proficient with the units, we will be allowing them to sign them out for the weekend. Geocaching is a great family activity for the out of doors. Many caches are hidden in the parks around the area. Stay tuned for more information.
