Principal’s Message - May 2012

It is hard to believe that May is soon upon us and there are only 8 more weeks of school. May and June are a busy time at our school and we hope parents will be able to participate in some of our school wide activities or the classroom based fieldtrips. Each one is a wonderful learning experience for our students and staff.

May 4th is our annual Jump Rope for Heart Event. We are looking for parents to assist with counting money or handing out drinks to students. If you are able to assist please contact the school.

Our grades 5 and 6 students will be participating in the Drug Abuse Resistance Education (DARE) program with Constable Dave Higgs from the Stonewall RCMP. Cst. Higgs will be instructing the program each morning from May 7th until May 18th. The students enjoy the program and it is a very proactive approach for students to make some powerful choices in the future. For more information visit their website at http://dare.org/home/International/ .

We will be hosting an information evening for all grade 4 students and their parents on May 17th at 6:30 p.m. to share about the 1 to 1 program. We look forward to seeing everyone in attendance on that evening.

As you can see, we are extremely busy at Stony Mountain School and we look forward to your participation in all events.

Mrs. Gustafson

PAC Thank You

The Stony Mountain Parent Advisory Council would like to remind all community members to be responsible dog owners. Please carry a plastic bag with you when you walk your dog. It is our hope that the community and school playground remain a clean and safe environment for all of our children to play. Thank you.

There will be no hot lunch for June.

Staff Attire on Tuesday, May 15th, 2012

In addition to casual Friday’s (as recognized by the Interlake School Division), the staff at Stony Mountain School will once again be supporting the fight against breast cancer by recognizing “National Denim Day” on May 15th. Jump Rope

It is time for Jump Rope again! Many students in Grades 3-8 have signed up to be a part of Jump Rope for Heart this year. Jump Rope for Heart is one of the Heart and Stroke Foundation's most successful long-standing programs.

This FUN-draiser gets students active, invests in the future health of all Canadian children, activates students to embrace a lifetime of healthy living and social responsibility and provides students with an opportunity to earn exciting thank-you prizes in return for collecting pledges that support the Heart and Stroke Foundation.

All students who have a pledge envelope are required to return the envelope to their teacher by May 3rd. If you have an envelope, but decided not to collect pledges, the envelope must be returned to the school. The event jumping day is on Friday, May 4th.

A big thank you to all of our students who are participating and to everyone for their support! We also are very appreciative of our PAC committee for their continued support with this event.

Attention Present Grade 4 Students & Future Grade 5 Students!

There will be an important meeting for parents and students on Thursday May 17th at 6:30 p.m. at the school regarding the One to One Classroom. Please plan to be in attendance as we will discuss the One to One Classroom, student engagement and learning, answer questions, as well as discuss payment options. We will also have students and parents from this year’s pilot program to share their experiences.
