Community Report in pdf format Community Report 2010 - 2011 in pdf format
As a school comprised of students, staff, parents and community, we are committed to the intellectual, physical, social and emotional development of each student. Together we strive for excellence within a safe and caring environment.
Teulon Collegiate works toward continued improvements through a process of school planning, where goals are identified, developed and implemented. This is a summary of this year’s goals and successes. As we believe that a strong partnership between the home and the school is critical to student success, the following information is intended to keep the parents of our students and our community informed.
1) To increase Student Engagement.
2) To make students more aware of Social justice and to engage our students in local and global actions.
1) Student engagement
We have upgraded the classroom technologies in many ways to promote the use of technology to engage students at our school. LCD projectors were installed in all classrooms. Some classrooms have been fitted with Mimio interactive white boards, and a trainer was brought in to in-service teachers in the use of the Mimio software. Teachers were also in-serviced on the use of Discovery Streaming, which is an interactive library of educational videos. New video editing software was installed on all high school lab computers which allows students to create and edit movies. A green screen was also painted in the high school Computer lab to allow for special effects creation. New white boards and bulletin boards have been installed in all middle years classrooms.
TCI students have been involved and engaged in, volleyball, basketball, badminton, track and field, cross country running, curling, hockey, Reach for the Top and many other extra curricular activities.
2) Social Justice
Eight TCI students travelled to Vancouver to participate in “We Day” and had a life changing experience. Upon returning, we held a planning session with 30 TCI students where we identified a local and a global action.
Our local action was to collect new and gently used books to donate a library to Little Grand Rapids School. We devoted the month of February to learn more about our First Nations cultures. The month was kicked off with a winter carnival featuring traditional games, bannock and crafts. Throughout the month we held a dream catcher workshop, our Health Jackpot Café had a First Nations themed luncheon, and seven students saw Adam Beach speak at Tec Voc High School. The month was wrapped up with a cultural celebration in our gym featuring traditional First Nations’ dancers and drummers and a special appearance by some local rappers. We collected 1310 books which were donated to the Little Grand Rapids School.
Our global action was to start raising funds to build a school in Haiti. It costs $8500 to build an entire school. We held a dance/talent show, held a three on three basketball tournament during spirit week, and sold bricks in our cafeteria for students to leave their mark. Thus far, 598.96 has been raised.
Many other groups at TCI participated in social justice activities. We participated in Operation Christmas Child, held a local food bank drive, a Christmas hamper drive, collected clothing, donated time to Siloam Mission, sold ornaments at Christmas time, and held a walk-a-thon for Angels for Africa. Students from our school also volunteered to sandbag in St. Laurent, and participated in activity day at Lower Fort Garry. On both occasions we received notes thanking us for sending a great group of students.
