To enable students to discover and develop their varied potentials and empower them to meet a multitude of diverse experiences by providing a safe, respectful and challenging environment.
I. To continue to provide a positive school environment through student engagement.
1. To promote student engagement in the areas of
i) social and emotional well-being
ii) learning environment iii) improved physical environment.
2. To promote awareness and engagement of students in the area of educational sustainable development focusing on social responsibility.
1.i) Students were encouraged to join one or more school activities throughout the year. Eighty-eight per cent of the student population was acknowledged at the Recognition Assembly in May for their participation in school activities this past year. Mr. Gregovski began a Volcano Club for students who wanted a meeting place and opportunity to practice their musical skills. The club purchased an electronic drum set during the year and applied for and received a YIP grant to purchase guitar kits for next year. The guitars will be made by students in the 2011-2012 school year.
ii) All students were given the opportunity to participate in a minimum of one or more field trips this past year. Teachers were encouraged to bring in guest speakers to compliment their programs. The development of time management strategies and accountability among the student population were areas that were targeted for improvement throughout the year. Homework Club was offered to the students from January to June, from 3:30-5:00 pm, Monday to Thursday. This took place in the library and it provided a quiet place for students to study, access extra teacher help, and do homework.
iii) Student art work was displayed throughout
the school, in hallways and on bulletin boards. The ten core character
virtues targeted in the previous year as well as this year were visually
displayed on canvas posters by art students. The character virtues we
felt help our students develop into caring, respectful and responsible
people were trustworthiness, respect, responsibility, fairness, caring,
citizenship, honesty, courage, diligence and integrity. Because of
excessive moisture again this spring, the shrubs and trees ordered to
complete Mr. Ferley’s Phase 3 Landscape Plan will not be delivered and
planted until next fall (weather permitting). We presently have a two
year back order of shrubs and trees that will be sent as soon as the
land allows for immediate planting.
3. Our ESD focus was awareness in regards to our social responsibility
and how youth need to take an active role in making the world a better
place for everyone. Some of the activities students participated in
throughout the year that focused on this area were Brush Out Poverty
cultural art exchange program, a Human Rights Conference focusing on
social responsibility and social justice, ISD’s Divisional Student Voice
workshop, Fair Trade presentations, No Voice Awareness Day, MCIC’s
Generating Momentum Leadership Conference in Gimli, and the Absolute
Think Day presentation for all students in May. We were also part of the
Highway #6 Schools and Lake St Martin School Twinning Project.
Unfortunately, the spring flooding and the evacuation of that community
resulted in our grade nines only sending penpal letters to the LSM grade
nine students. In June, we received notification that our application to
be part of the WE Schools in Action program was accepted and we look
forward to becoming more actively involved global citizens in the coming
year in the area of social issues.
Thank you to our HiPAC members for their support throughout the year and HiPAC’s generous contribution toward the large fast fold screen that will be used at the graduation ceremony this year. Thank you to the parents and community for their continued support.
We wish all our school and community families a safe and happy summer!
See you in September!
