 OUR NEW SCHOOL

Woodlands Elementary is in the process of getting a new school. On June 7, 2011, the architects held a stakeholders meeting to get input from the community and staff as to their vision for the design of the new school. They are now in the process of taking these ideas and developing 4 or 5 possible plans which they will again share with the community in the fall. Parents, students, community members, staff and anyone interested are encouraged to attend this meeting and help decide what the new school will look like.

Sustainable Development and Engaging Students

. . . in their learning has been a major focus over the last two years.

Teachers have taken workshops on inquiry based learning and using multiple intelligences to accommodate a range of learning styles.

Students have taken part in a variety of activities and projects and have had the opportunity to demonstrate their learning in different ways.

Sustainable development ideas and topics, particularly in the area of social justice are integrated across the curricula. The students have been involved in many activities to help those in need. Just a few include:

Walk-a thon - raised over $1200.00 and was divided among a local, national and international charity.

Terry Fox Run/Walk for cancer

Christmas Cheer Board

Recycling

Bully Busters - students catching other students doing acts of kindness.

Collecting backpacks which are donated to the homeless.

For 2011-2012 Woodlands Elementary is registered as an Eco school - the number of activities which are related to sustainable development determine the level of eco - school achieved.
WE school - part of the from “me” to “we” movement . The school is committed to completing one local and one international activity related to social justice. 15 students will have a chance of taking part in WE day - a national youth forum with international speakers - in Winnipeg in November.
